Professor Hiroki Shirato has been nominated as a Commission Member of the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) and assumed the position in April 2023.
The mission of the ICUR is to develop and promulgate internationally accepted recommendations on radiation related quantities and units, terminology, measurement procedures, and reference data for the safe and efficient application of ionizing radiation to medical diagnosis and therapy, radiation science and technology, and radiation protection of individuals and populations.
The ICRU has been consistently active since 1925 as a non-profit organization, working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and other organizations and institutions. Not only organizations and institutions but also radiation-related workers, patients (especially cancer patients), and the whole public have been receiving benefits from it.
The ICRU consists of more than a dozen experts in various fields. Professor Shirato is expected to prepare and review relevant international recommendations and perform related ICRU duties as an expert in radiation therapy and particle therapy.
Upon assuming his new position, he said, I will make efforts to reflect the state-of-art radiation medicine and radiation science and technology in international recommendations. We sincerely look forward to his future activities.
